Thorn Tree Safari

The Thorn Tree Safari is a popular short safari including the famous, recently renovated game viewing lodge, Treetops, and the world-renowned game reserve, the Masai Mara. This four-night safari offers a wonderful combination of mountain scenery, the Great Rift Valley and plains dotted with game.

Full Itinerary

Day 1 Monday Heathrow to Nairobi

Fly from Heathrow overnight to Nairobi.

 

Day 2 Tuesday Aberdares

Transfer to the Somak Safari Lounge, where you can freshen up before departing for lunch at the Outspan Hotel (180 km – approximately 4 hours). Continue onto Treetops, the world renowned rustic tree house which is legendary for its historic royal connection. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Overnight: Treetops. (L, D)

Day 3 Wednesday Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha

Drive to Lake Nakuru (180 km – approximately 4 hours). Enjoy a game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, sanctuary to one of the largest populations of rhinos in Kenya, plus Rothschild’s giraffes, leopards and lions. After lunch at Lake Nakuru Lodge, continue your journey to Lake Naivasha (80 km – approximately 2 hours), where over 450 species of birds have been recorded. Overnight: Lake Naivasha Country Club. Day 4 Thursday Masai Mara

Drive to the magnificent Masai Mara (270 km – approximately 5 hours 30 minutes), home to countless animal species including the ‘big five’ and a multitude of plains game. Lunch at your lodge followed by an afternoon game drive. Overnight: Keekorok Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 5 Friday Masai Mara

Enjoy an early morning game drive with further opportunities to see the superb wildlife, followed by breakfast at the lodge, or take an early morning balloon flight over the Mara followed by a “bubbly” bush breakfast (optional extra). A second game drive will take place in the late afternoon. Overnight: Keekorok Lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 6 Saturday Extension or Heathrow

Return to Nairobi by road (300 km – approximately 6 hours), or fly from the Mara to Nairobi: morning flight (from £170); lunch in the Mara and afternoon flight (from £240). Proceed with your chosen extension or return to Heathrow. (B)

Alternatively, fly directly from the Mara to Mombasa, including lunch in the Mara (from £370). (15kg luggage allowance on all light aircraft).

Extensions

Complement your Kili Safari with a beach stay on the Kenya Coast, Zanzibar, Seychelles or Mauritius. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda is a superb addition to a safari.

Lodge Information

Aberdares: Treetops – This rustic tree house is famous for its historic royal connection. The waterhole is visited by many animals including elephants, rhinos and buffalos, which can be viewed from the rooms and viewing platforms. Treetops has a restaurant, lounge and two bars. There are 33 en suite rooms and 3 suites. Reopened in April 2012 following extensive refurbishment.

 

Lake Naivasha: Lake Naivasha Country Club – Set in 30 acres of green lawns with acacia and pepper trees, this old colonial style property offers comfortable accommodation. The main area includes a lounge with fireplace, bar and alfresco dining. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool and pool bar. There are 42 en suite rooms

and 8 cottages.

 

Masai Mara: Keekorok Lodge – One of the first lodges in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Offers a main restaurant serving international and local delicacies, three bars including the Hippo Bar, a cafe and a TV lounge. Leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool. 87 rooms, 10 chalets and 2 suites with en suite bath and private balcony.

Mara Ballooning Option

An exciting alternative to your morning game drive. Up before dawn and drive to the balloon launch site. After the balloon is inflated, climb aboard and sail away on an exhilarating flight for about an hour. A “bubbly” breakfast with all the trimmings is served where you touchdown.
