Sri Lanka Highlights with Private Driver

This is a private journey where you will have the freedom to choose what you would like to see and at your own pace. Your private driver will act as you guide and can take you around to the sights. Along the way enjoy the incredible scenery & culture. We’ve chosen fantastic accommodation on this journey and the route is something we’ve done for our own holidays and our clients absolutely love it.

Tour Highlights

Take in Sri Lanka’s interior in the Cultural Triangle, then Kandy with it’s fascinating setting and history, then the gorgeous hill country where tea is a way of life. There are so many things to see from national parks, ancient sites, charming villages and more

Private Driver

Your private driver picks you up at the airport at your Colombo hotel if you have chosen to stay overnight. From there they stay in the staff quarters at each hotel you stay at then drop you off at your beach hotel.

Each day your driver can offer advice on where to go our you can set out your ‘wish’ list of things you would like to do. There really is a great deal of freedom however there is a mileage limit but it is incredibly rare to reach your daily mileage limit (it would require driving almost the whole day!)

Entrance fees are paid by you, the client. In some cases you driver will join you and take you through the sites. On jeep safari’s you will be accompanied by local guides.

Our Opinion

I love this particular journey, I have done variations of this several times and every time I go back it just gets better and better. There is a warm welcome everywhere and such diverse places to see.

Full Itinerary

Day 1

Fly Sri Lankan Airlines from Heathrow

Day 2-4

On arrival, transfer to Kandalama, approximately four hours by road. Stay at the 4-Star Deluxe Heritance Kandalama for 3 nights (Bed & Breakfast)

Heritance Kandalama – a stunning hotel camouflaged in lush foliage on a mountainside. There are two pools including an infinity pool overlooking Kandalama Lake in the background. Watch the monkeys lazing among the branches and will sneak into your room and steal your clothes so keep the doors closed! Kandalama is close to Sigiriya Rock, Dumbulla in the cultural triangle. You can also head to nearby national parks or head off on an elephant safari. Polonnaruwa is also a wonderful place to visit.

Day 5-6

Head south to Kandy, perhaps stopping along the way at a Spice Plantation if you wish. Stay overnight in Kandy at the Earl’s Regency (Bed & Breakfast) for 2 nights stay.

Earl’s Regency, Kandy, Sri Lanka – This lovely hotel overlooks the Mahaweli River Valley in lush green surroundings. Beautiful rooms, a great lobby bar, and excellent food make this a great choice. From here you can visit the Palace of the Tooth Relic of Buddha, overlooking the picturesque Kandy Lake and make sure you see the Kandyan Dance in the evening. Stroll in the botanical gardens at Peradeniya; or hike in the mountains and see the world spread out below you.

Day 7

Today head into higher country where you’ll see tea plantations and incredible mountain scenery. Pass through little England – Nuwara Eliya – enroute to the incredible Tea Factory Hotel for 1 night stay. (Half Board)

There may be the possibility of going by Train to Nuwara Eliya. This is a sensational train journey with amazing scenery pretty much the entire route.

Tea Factory – Journey to the top of the world across a limitless mountain vista adorned by a green carpet of tea plants above which is the Tea Factory. Rooms overlook the tea plantations where you can bike ride or explore on foot. The local guides are excellent and cang guide you into the hills. In the atrium of the Tea Factory, you’ll find the old tea factory machine, some of which is turned on at certain times of the day so you can imagine how it once was.

Day 8

Depart from the Tea Factory heading to your chosen beach resort or add a stop in Udawalawe or Yala National Park. Which ever route you take the scenery is magnificent.
